A few words to share about Texas and its recent tragic events

A few words to share about Texas and its recent tragic events.

My friends,

On the 4th of July we celebrate the birthday of the United States.  At times the word “United” feels like a reach.  But in times of trouble, Americans have always looked after and cared for each other.  Americans are rightly known as a caring and generous people.

Like everyone else this morning, I am stunned and heartbroken at the news from Texas.  Texas officials believe at this time more than 80 people have been killed.  In the Texas Hill Country, Camp Mystic-a Christian Summer camp, 27 young girls and counselors are confirmed dead.  The depth of this tragedy touches all of our hearts.  I myself, being the parent of 2 Camp Ramah campers, can’t even imagine what grief the parents of those Texas campers and staff must be feeling.

It seems to me, there are things we can do from Southern California to assist our fellow Americans.  Prayer is very important.  It reminds those affected that they are not alone and suffering in a vacuum.  Prayer tells our fellow Americans we feel their pain and care about them.  This is one of those times where I don’t have a formal prayer from our tradition.  It is one of those times where the prayer from the heart truly matters.  Asking G!d to send comfort and relief to the people of Texas, send them recovery and strength to face the tasks and challenges before them.  To offer comfort to those who suffered loss and healing for those injured or harmed.   The other thing we can do from our homes, is offer financial support.  I did a search this morning and there are many legitimate groups one may contribute to.  I do not have a particular group I suggest.  I can say, if one searches on Google for Jewish groups offering aid, there are many in Texas and again, I do not have a specific one to suggest.

As Americans, we often disagree, but when our fellow Americans are in need or trouble, we have been and should be compassionate and open our hearts and arms to embrace those in need.

May G!d send healing and strength to the people of Texas.
